Asking a previous client (from when I was in fund administration) as a reference?

A place I’m interviewing at has asked for a reference from a client I worked closely with before. I actually have quite a few clients I can ask from my last job in fund administration. Since I have long since left that job (end of last year), is it okay for me to reach out to that client to ask if they’d be okay being a reference for me? I’m just wondering if this would, by any means, be a breach of NDA or if I could get in trouble for even reaching out to this client after I don’t work with them anymore.
