Also, if you extend term "PE" beyond the buyout phase (i.e. if you count Growth Equity shops that are beyond the venture phase), you'll find that most of the players are either based or have a strong presence out here.

Plenty of well known names will have various funds on the west coast. Usually they'll be more specific strategies like middle market buyout, credit/special situations, etc.

Blackstone and KKR have offices in Menlo Park; TPG has one in SF; Warburg Pincus has one in SF, etc.

There are also a ton of elite smaller PE shops scattered around California.
