BB IB (2 yrs) -> UMM PE (2-3 years) -> Private Credit?

Is this a common path at all?

Have been thinking of joining an industry that has greater promotion visibility than MF/UMM PE, is private credit more promotion-friendly? Do MF PC firms hire UMM PE associates?

Transitioning from BB IB to UMM PE and then to Private Credit is not an uncommon path. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  1. Path Feasibility:

    • Moving from UMM PE to Private Credit is a logical step, as the skill sets in PE (e.g., financial modeling, deal structuring, and due diligence) are highly transferable to Private Credit roles.
    • Many Private Credit firms value candidates with PE experience, especially those who have worked on leveraged buyouts or similar transactions.
  2. Promotion Visibility in Private Credit:

    • Private Credit is often seen as more promotion-friendly compared to MF/UMM PE.
    • Unlike many MF/UMM PE firms that operate on a "2-and-out" model (requiring an MBA or lateral move for progression), Private Credit firms tend to have leaner teams and offer clearer paths to senior roles without the need for an MBA.
    • Work-life balance and job stability are also generally better in Private Credit compared to MF/UMM PE.
  3. Hiring from UMM PE:

    • MF Private Credit firms do hire UMM PE associates, especially those with strong deal experience and a solid understanding of credit markets.
    • Your UMM PE background would position you well for these roles, as it demonstrates your ability to evaluate investments and manage portfolio companies, which are critical skills in Private Credit.

If you're looking for greater promotion visibility and a more predictable career trajectory, Private Credit could be a strong option to consider.
