Best Project Finance Groups for PE

Hi all, I’ve been looking into PF more lately as a career path, led by an interest in alternative energy. Pending more research / calls with those in the industry, I think I’d be more interested in PF than an energy investment banking role. What are placements like for PF roles at private equity funds? I’ve seen that many of the large PF players are Japanese / French banks, will they place as well as an American BB? Any advice would be appreciated here.

Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, project finance (PF) can be a strong pathway into private equity, particularly in sectors like renewable energy and infrastructure. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Placement into PE from PF: PF roles are highly specialized, and the skillset—especially financial modeling for structured deals—is valued by infrastructure and renewable energy PE funds. Exit opportunities often include roles at infrastructure/renewable energy funds, leveraged finance teams, or even direct placements into PE firms with a focus on energy or infrastructure.

  2. Top PF Groups: While Japanese and French banks (e.g., Mitsubishi UFJ, SMBC, BNP Paribas, Société Générale) are dominant players in PF globally, American bulge brackets like JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch also have strong PF teams. JPMorgan, in particular, is noted for its leadership in tax equity and project finance for renewables.

  3. American BB vs. International Banks: American BBs may offer better brand recognition and broader exit opportunities, especially in the U.S. market. However, Japanese and French banks are deeply entrenched in PF and can provide excellent experience in large-scale, complex deals, which is highly transferable to PE roles.

  4. Advice for Breaking In: If you're targeting PE, focus on PF groups with exposure to renewable energy or infrastructure projects. These sectors align closely with the investment strategies of many PE funds. Networking with professionals in these groups and understanding their deal flow will be crucial.
