Best tech private equity shops for career progression?
Hey guys,
I'm incoming at a tech EB and want to get a feel for which private equity firms will provide me with the best opportunity to stay with the fund past my associate years. I realize that many tech focused shops advertise themselves as friendlier towards internal promotion, but these things rarely materialize. Is that a function of competition? Senior talent retention? See below for the firms that I'm interested in:
- Tech MFs: SLP, Thoma, Vista, FP (not really MF but)
- Investors with strong tech presence: H&F, TA, Clearlake (generalist at aso?)
- Traditional MF tech groups: KKR, Carlyle, TPG
Which of these firms provide the best opportunities for juniors to progress? Also happy to hear of any others that might come to mind, plus general recommendations of firms I can add to my list.
Thanks!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of the firms you mentioned and their potential for career progression in tech private equity:
Tech Mega Funds (MFs):
Investors with Strong Tech Presence:
Traditional MF Tech Groups:
Additional Recommendations: - Francisco Partners (FP): While not a mega fund, FP is a standout in tech PE, focusing on mid-market software and tech deals. It offers strong career progression opportunities and a collaborative culture. - Insight Partners: A growth equity firm with a strong tech focus, Insight is known for its hands-on approach and opportunities for juniors to grow within the firm.
General Advice: - Career progression often depends on the firm's culture, deal flow, and your performance. While some firms may advertise internal promotion, the reality can vary based on competition and senior talent retention. - Consider firms like Francisco Partners and Insight Partners if you're looking for a balance between strong tech focus and career progression opportunities. - Networking and understanding the specific group dynamics within these firms can also help you make a more informed decision.

KKR is a powerhouse. They have a dedicated Growth team.
Haha. KKR isn't top at tech growth or buyouts lol. I don't know where you heard that from. I actually work in tech PE and there are far better MFs out there that do tech.
