Best Way to Lateral

For context I'm a Sr. Associate at an UMM NYC based fund. Got told I'm unlikely to get the VP promote. Anyone have ideas on the best way to go about lateraling? I've reached out the headhunters, but the opportunity pool is relatively limited (lots of new funds, rare to find anything larger than 1bn).

Is there much value in directly networking by reaching out to Directors / MD's at other firms? Not sure if I can leverage a networking call into a proprietary lateral opportunity...

Stand outside the building of another UMM you find intriguing Pursuit of Happiness Style. Bring your little son as well to help create a sense of urgency.

Any MM / UMM will use the headhunters. You can utilize your network (school alum, from banking or other ex colleagues that also lateraled) but don’t think you will get anything “proprietary”. Even if you get looped into a process through your network, most firms will then loop you into the HH running it
