Breaking into IB/PE/CRE as a freshman in college (Cliche question, I know)

I am a freshman at Michigan (Ann-Arbor) studying economics. I applied to the finance clubs, got some interviews but did not get into any. Will re-apply next sem. Would like to know what else I should be doing to stay ahead for recruiting and also strengthen my club apps for next semester. Any certifications I can obtain online?
