Brookfield PE Questions

Have a few questions about Brookfield, specifically related to compensation (particularly surrounding carry and more senior compensation structures).

I’ve heard they REALLY lock in their employees such that they don’t benefit until their late, late careers.

Can anyone shed light on this? Someone literally told me you get a $1 mm loan when you start and if you leave you owe it back (extreme version of Centerview’s $50k bonus) and you can’t really touch your carry until you’re pretty much retired.
What’s the carry structure like?

How well-compensated are people at Brookfield?
By the end of their careers are they worth in the mid to high 8-figures?

How much would someone like Anuj Ranjan make?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, there isn't specific information about Brookfield's compensation structure, carry details, or individual earnings such as those of Anuj Ranjan. However, I can provide some general insights into compensation structures in private equity, which may be helpful:

  • Carry Structure: In private equity, carry, or carried interest, is a share of the profits that investment professionals receive from the funds they manage. It's typically distributed after the fund has returned the capital to its limited partners (LPs) and achieved a certain rate of return, known as a hurdle rate. The carry is often structured with a vesting period, which could be several years, meaning that employees may not be able to access it until later in their careers.

  • Senior Compensation: At more senior levels, compensation can include a base salary, bonuses, and a share of the carry. The exact amounts can vary widely depending on the firm's size, success, and the individual's role within the firm.

  • Long-Term Incentives: It's not uncommon for private equity firms to have long-term incentive structures in place to retain top talent. These can sometimes include loans or advances that are forgiven over time as long as the employee remains with the company.

  • Wealth Accumulation: Over the course of their careers, successful private equity professionals can accumulate significant wealth, potentially reaching mid to high 8-figures, depending on the success of the funds they manage and their personal stake in the carry.

For specific information about Brookfield's compensation and carry structure, it would be best to look at industry reports, reach out to current or former Brookfield employees, or review any publicly available financial disclosures from the firm. If you're looking for detailed insights into compensation at Brookfield or any other firm, the WSO Company Database or reaching out to the community in the forums could be a good starting point.
