Built a free mock interview tool for IB/PE - now at a MF but bombed my first IB interview

When I was recruiting for IB, I bombed my first real interview because I had only reviewed the question banks and did the flash card thing. Only realized when I was doing the interview that I hadn't actually said any of it out loud (and I really sucked at saying it out loud). After that, I focused a ton on mock interviews with upper years and the next set of interviews went way better.

Now at a MF and wanted to try my hand at building something so created Superday (Superday) - platform that does live voice mock interviews specifically for IB/PE. You talk, it asks follow-ups, pushes back, and gives a real scored breakdown after. The idea is that its just real, on-demand reps, whenever you want them, rather than you having to convince some upper year student to give up 3 hours during recruiting season.

It's completely free right now - I just wanted to try building something I wish I had back in college. You can request access on the site (I'll approve in 2 min)!

Looking for honest feedback - does the voice feel real, is the scorecard actually useful, does it look AI-ey, anything broken, would you would use over BIWS / 300Hours? Hope this helps some students looking to break in!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your initiative to create a free mock interview tool for IB/PE is a fantastic idea, especially since many candidates struggle with verbalizing their answers during interviews. Here are some key points and feedback to consider:

  1. Addressing a Real Pain Point: Many candidates, like yourself, realize too late that practicing out loud is crucial. Your platform fills this gap by providing on-demand, live voice mock interviews, which can be a game-changer for students who lack access to experienced mentors or peers during recruiting season.

  2. Scored Breakdown: The inclusion of a scored breakdown is a strong feature. Candidates often benefit from actionable feedback, so ensure the scorecard is detailed, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. Avoid making it feel overly "AI-generated" by incorporating nuanced, human-like feedback.

  3. Follow-Ups and Pushbacks: These are critical for replicating the real interview experience. Ensure the follow-ups are dynamic and contextually relevant to the candidate's responses, as this will make the tool feel more authentic and less scripted.

  4. Comparison to BIWS/300Hours: While platforms like BIWS and 300Hours are excellent for technical prep, your tool stands out by focusing on verbal practice and real-time interaction. Highlight this unique value proposition when promoting your platform.

  5. User Experience: Make sure the interface is intuitive and user-friendly. If the voice feels too robotic or the process is cumbersome, it might deter users. Gathering honest feedback from early users will be crucial to refining this aspect.

  6. Free Access: Offering the tool for free initially is a smart move to attract users and gather feedback. However, consider a monetization strategy for the future, such as premium features or partnerships with universities and finance clubs.

  7. Potential Improvements:

    • Add a feature for behavioral and technical question customization based on the user's target role (e.g., IB vs. PE).
    • Include a library of common questions and answers for self-study alongside the mock interviews.
    • Offer a progress tracker to help users measure improvement over time.

Your platform has the potential to become a valuable resource for aspiring finance professionals. Keep iterating based on user feedback, and it could become a staple in IB/PE prep!

As an update - we’ve opened the beta - students/professionals from Harvard, Wharton, U Chicago, U Michigan, etc have all started onboarding and we’ve completed dozens of interviews - we plan to release more features over the coming weeks (school club leaderboards, tools to help you plan your prep, and a free training course that would normally cost $500+) - thanks to all who have engaged so far! If you like it, feel free to drop a comment here or SB so we can keep testing!
