Depends....I assume this is a smaller firm. If that is what the email from HR (or from the sound of it a person in the group) says then I suggest a suit, colored shirt (dark blue, stripped, ect) and no tie....That second line about no need to be formal...sounds to me like you may insult them slightly if you go in full suit and tie. Put a tie in your pocket as a backup.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

If they were silent on the issue, sure, you always err on the formal side. However, they told you to wear business casual, so listen to what they told you. Suit, no tie.

If they had simply said that you can feel free to dress business casual, then I would say that you should stick with a suit. However, considering they went out of their way to further that statement by letting you know that the suit is not necessary (in other words not what they'd prefer), I would definitely respect their preference and go business casual. Suit without a tie is fine - but a nice button down, pants and blazer will definitely do the trick as well. Dress to impress and remember to relax. The reason for the lack of suit is probably not only because it is how they operate and are comfortable, but also to get you feeling more comfortable.

Where is this interview?

If you are on the west coast, do not wear a jacket of any kind, there are plenty of hedge funds where people wear jeans and sneakers to work on the west coast, if they specifically said not to wear a suit I would guess these guys are very casual.

I used to work at a fund where the only rule for dress was no shorts or t-shirts on weekdays. I've had meetings with CEOs wearing torn up jeans and a pair of old New Balances while they've been in wso/">suits. If we said not to wear a suit and you showed up in a blazer we would laugh and think you were uptight, that was west coast.

If you are in NYC or Chicago I would go with blazer and no tie.

Agree with everyone above. A suit with no tie (though you could always have one handy for back pocket purposes ;P).

There's a closer meaning to my user name. Try reading it quickly. Perhaps you will then understand ;P
