Career Advice - Private Equity

Hey everyone,

Over the past 6 months I've went from having a great idea for a website to actually starting to implement and develop our product, which is awesome. To be completely and utterly honest, I don't see the site getting SO much traffic and bringing in SO much revenue that I will be able to retire and move the Cayman islands. Now, with that said, it has made me realize that I LOVE doing this kind of stuff and its the direction I want to take my career....helping businesses succeed.

Now in terms of my career as it is today, I am in equity sales for a reputable boutique broker/dealer and need to figure out my best option(s) to get involved in my "holy grail."

As it stands today, I am a "sales assistant" as I am only 24 and haven't gotten the bump up to be placed directly onto a sales team just yet. It would clearly be in my best interest to gain some research experience as that is direct experience needed for PE shops. I don't, however, know if this is possible at my current shop and thus am thinking of ways to get the experience I need.

Would you suggest I try to jump ship and get into an analyst program elsewhere for a year or so? Or is that not necessary and I can somehow develop a story for how my experience now is related to PE? Would it be wise for me to go straight for my MBA and then make the move to PE? I'm confused, don't have many people to reach out to on the matter, and would love some input!

Thanks!

No. You need transaction experience (from an M&A, leveraged finance, or financial sponsors group; or a reputable industry group). You should try to lateral into an IB analyst program to eventually make the jump to PE.

Also, be sure you completely understand what PE does and the role of a junior analyst/associate before making any big decisions. If you loved your entrepreneurial experience, you should pursue more entrepreneurial endeavors; or, perhaps venture capital. You will have not have a similar role or experience in PE.
