CBS to Private Equity

Hello! I was lucky enough to be admitted to CBS as an ED applicant to start in Aug21. CBS has always been one of my top choice schools because of its incredible location and several alumni I have met with outstanding careers in IB or PE, so I am really happy. I have always loved Wharton as well, mostly by its brand and PE placement (did not love the idea of living in Philly)

I have been doing PE in Emerging Markets during the last couple of years and would love to continue doing so after the MBA. I thought that because the PE recruting is usually off-campus, I would have an advantage attending CBS, as it would ease the needed coffee chats, interviews and networking in general. Also, the STEM designation that CBS MBA has gives it a huge advantage for international students regarding working in the US post-MBA. I also strongly prefer to live in NY than in Philly during B-School, as I believe I will have a better time in this city.

However, reading further this and other forums, people seem to be reducing CBS potential  (only rescuing it for AM/Value Investing), something that surprised me a lot, and have tagged the school in a not so positive manner. I would like to understand further this posture and get to know if it is mainly by Uris Hall horrible building (which I dont care that much and CBS' new building will be opened between 2021-2022). I also would love to understand if I would be better trying to give me a chance at Wharton (considering the downside that my post-MBA visa will be just for one year and that living in Philly instead of NY would affect my networking off-campus and recreational activities). I would like to understand if Wharton will probably take me places that CBS won't. I thought before that not, as PE recruiting is mostly self-driven, but I still would value your opinion.

Thank you very much for your time.

Wharton > CBS for PE, hands down. If you're set on PE, go to Wharton.

Going to CBS for PE is not the end of the world (especially since you have pre-MBA PE experience). Do the following:

  • Make a spreadsheet of all CBS alums in PE
  • Reach out to them and keep track of conversations, make good professional relationships, take notes of the calls, e.g., you are playing inside sales but you are the product
  • Reach out to all of the typical American headhunters (e.g., CPI, HSP, Dynamics, the other 5-6) and tell them what you're looking for (have a crisp story, but you can read more elsewhere on the forum about headhunter interactions)
  • Start discussing with the CBS career office about placement into PE and see what services and advice they can offer you (never too early)
  • Ring up the CBS PE Club (I am sure they have a PE student club) and try to be as active as possible in that; it will offer some sort of recruiting pipeline support and ability to show value in building an American PE network

This should put you in about as good of a position as you can be. CBS sends people to PE every year, although at a lower rate than Wharton. You should check out the CBS career services job placement pamphlet to see which PE firms they send people to every year. You may not get exactly what you want (e.g., if you are KKR or bust you may be toast) but you can get something (iirc Summit recruits heavily out of CBS but I might be misremembering that - doesn't matter - point is that there are jobs to be had from CBS).
