Chaces of moving from operations to Front end PE role
So I recently got a job as an Operations Associate in a PE firm (having 2 braches- PE advisory where I will work and principal investment). About a year into the job I will get to the positin of Research Assoicate or Investment Associate (is rare as they prefer MBA while I am a B com graduate from 2022 batch and an ACCA affiliate).
So realistically what are my chaces of moving into a front end role in a bigger PE firm let's say 3-5 years down the line. I do not intent to do my MBA right now. Although I am consuming a lot of information regarding how PE works (deal structure, fee structure and jargon etc) I understand I sitll have to work on my financial modeling skills.
Therefore, I seek your advice on what can i do in order to improve my chances of getting the job. I am open to CFA, FRM, FMVA and any other course.
Thanks for your help in advance
Absolutely none, sorry. The roles have nothing in common, and the candidate pool for PE is very deep and they require in-depth modeling experience gained over a few years at an IB/PE firm.
I think your only path is to do MBA (sooner than later) and go to IB and then try to do PE from there.
In your opinion would passive experience in financial modeling work. What i mean is rather than working on various transactions in IB (which ofc I know would be highly preferred), would creating a portfolio websites and posting 20-30 financial models of companies in various industires and geographies help me stand out.
Also there are some ex-employees (Research dept) of the firm who have gone to work in JPM and Bain. However, they haven't accpeted my LinkedIn request yet so have no clarity on that :(( (Both haven't done masters but one worked in a IB KPO earlier)
Honestly no it wouldn't. I know it sucks, but PE is basically the hardest industry to break into and why would they take someone who's done a few unvetted models over someone with 5 closed deals and a verified banking training program under their belt. There's simply no shortage of people looking to get into PE and even showing you have a lot of interest just doesn't compare to someone who lived and breathed actual deal work for 80 hours a week for 2 full years.
Research -> PE is also not common or likely as the models and work are still extremely different. JPM and Bain are not PE firms and unless you know their role it could still very likely be in research (for clarity, Bain Capital is PE, but the big Bain you see a lot is a consulting firm)
Your options are either to network with the smallest, microcap "PE" funds out there and see if they'd give you a shot - but realistically will be next to impossible to move to larger UMM or MF funds from there. Or M7 / top 15 MBA to IB for a few years.
Sorry if I sound a bit downer - the path is clear and well traveled but there's not really many alternate options if you don't want MBA
Would be better if in a reporting or valuations role vs operations. Operations there’s zero chance since the work has almost zero overlap unfortunately
Thank you for the reply.
I understand that operations is not related to front desk PE in any way. However, I was told (by hiring manager) that post 1 year I would be able to move into the role of Reseach associate or Investment Associate. Therefore, I was asking regarding the exit oppourtunities for these 2 roles as even I don't intent to stay in operations for long. The firm I am going to join is very flexible and past employees have mentioned that they are willing to give reporting, financial analysis etc as part-time assignments if you have the passion.
So if I have expereince as a Research Associae or an Investmet Assoicate of 2 years would I have good opportunties in the top tier PE firms (buyout). Or should I start searching for B-schools :(
I'm also being told the same at a BB. Considering business operations BO and told that movement to FO is not impossible, which seems debated. Any update on this??
surprised noone is asking... does "operations associate" mean you are working solely on internal operations at the firm or working on operational projects at portfolio companies/doing ops diligence? the other comments are correct if its the former, but a move is more likely if the latter (still unlikely)
No this includes just intenral operations, conduction market research and due diligence (not sure if CDD, FDD or ODD, had no idea of all these when I gave the interview). However, is due diligence a good role.
