Chances of switching to PE from RE with the current job market (MF re intern)

I rarely see people switch from real estate to top-tier, traditional high finance rules, such as investment banking, or private equity. I want to give it a shot but I was wondering if I could even land something like a middle-market shop in this environment? everything I have done has been real estate related, and I landed a great role this summer however, it’s looking like a majority of people interning in real estate will not be returning.

More on my background: Interned at a MF for the re group. Seems like everyone knows basics on traditional DCF/LBO but real estate has different jargon as some of you know. I study liberal arts which may be tough for firms who actually care about your major (unsure how big of an issue this is). I don’t go to HYSW either.

For RE I believe I have a very strong background as I’ve worked at 3 shops doing real estate equity and 1 shop lending. This strong background (working during the school year and getting reps early) is what got me the mf role. However this summer I realized there’s so much more to learn in “traditional” finance paths and I always thought the things the buyouts interns or even credit interns were doing was much cooler.

This summer very few got return offers and I know this is across the street so it will make recruiting for traditional roles even harder. Me (RE experience) vs other PE MF interns or top banking interns who did not get returns due to the market.

Any advice would help. I will probably have to decide soon as it will be difficult enough juggling recruiting, school, college life. Will he even more difficult if I don’t focus on one and have to study up multiple sectors and network in multiple areas.
