Chief of Staff Roles in PE/VC

Anyone care to explain to me why Chief of Staff roles are on the rise in PE/VC firms?

Generally these folks are supercharged EA’s who help with the operations of the firm but wondering why there has been such an increase in this role recently?

And Ofcourse this wouldn’t be an official WSO post if I didn’t ask about what the exits look like?

thanks

Lots of big firms using these as a 2-3 year parking spot to shadow a top executive, build a network, and learn how the business runs. I think people are seeing the value of a dedicated person to make briefings, slide decks for your meetings etc without having an admin who isn't trained to do that, or taking a random person off of deal work to cover it.

Exits are mostly internal, people do this role for a few years and then are sent off to top strategies/teams. Make sure you work for someone who is a reasonable boss and is legitimately interested in your growth/career.

From what I’ve seen it’s basically analyst / associate type of work but you’re working directly with top management, kind of like the “technical assistant” role that started at Microsoft and also was at Amazon (look it up, Andy Jassy was Bezos’ TA before running AWS).

No idea what exits would be but I get the feeling that investment roles at the fund are not common. If it’s a really big firm and you’re really good at the job you could probably join any group you choose but that’s 100% speculation.
