Comp for bonus left on the table?
Does anyone have experience recruiting for buyside but with a significant amount of accumulated bonus that would be left on the table? How common is it for the shop to comp a portion if not all the expected bonus? Just want to get a sense if that is a thing or if it'd be very rare. Asking with respect to off-cycle hiring.
TIA!
Neither your current firm or the new recruiting firm will comp part of your bonus.
It’s not unheard of, but certainly less likely than getting nothing. Definitely worth asking the new company, but when you’re going through your decision calculus I would assume you’re not getting any portion of it
Know less on PE side, on HF side it is common and you should expect at least a portion (over 50%). It will greatly depend on your seniority and how hard it is to fill the role they are searching for. Extremely common at senior levels, still common at junior levels, but less so. In PE I’ve seen it happen (from people I know) but I have no personal experience with it.
As another poster said though, if you need that to happen to switch (I.e. you expect this money and won’t leave without it) you are taking a bit of a risk, there is a chance they won’t do anything for you.
I got an off cycle offer and was able to negotiate a payout for my accrued bonus due to a difference on bonus payout timing between banking and PE (summer v. calendar year). It was not offered up front, but there was no real push back after I asked and they paid the full pro rated amount of my expected bonus.
That's nice to hear, was it a few months of accrued bonus?
