Comp negotiation drama

Fuzzed the numbers a bit for anon.

I am coming out of grad school into a specialist fund -- have essentially been working part time throughout school for various gigs. I have an offer at an L/S group that is for mid 6 figures (180 base, rest bonus).

I decided it wasn't my style, and have been in a long arduous recruiting process with this PE/VC fund that lasted 3 months. Long story short I believe I blew their socks off. In the final case I went toe to toe with one of their lead analysts and found diligence that they had never uncovered.

They called me with the offer an hour later and said 170+70 no carry. I was obviously shocked.

I said that's low based on my other offer. We agreed I would counter by email. I came back with the following:

170 base

210 bonus

100bps carry.

I also said I'd be open to earnouts and vesting schedules that made it more aligned.

I based this off a convo with a similar more experienced (but less talented) former employee with the fund who hinted he got 3-500 +100bps.

Fund manager calls me immediately afterwards and very aggressive. Says I am getting bad advice, He had allegedly heard red flags about me previously (from that former employee!), this gives him second thoughts, this makes me look like a difficult person to work with and will be asking for partner in a year, offer is no longer on the table and he has to talk with the other partners now. Says I've never had a real job before and I should be grateful for the opportunity. He says "entry level" should be looking to negotiate +/- 10% my # is ridiculous etc. He will revisit after the weekend.

It seemed like classic hardball tactics and I immediately caved and apologized etc. So maybe effective tactics? But the experience left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Now I'm considering whether to drop the process entirely and just go L/S. The process has left a bad taste in my mouth and I think this guy (or this kind of manager in general) will only respect me if I go make a million dollars in long short and he hires me as a partner or something (which he has done a couple times now with his other employees).
