Consultants in PE

Have anyone worked / interacted with colleagues who are consultants in the deal team?

What are they good at, and how could they be different vs bankers? Since PE job is like banking 2.0, how well can they handle / learn all the models?

Depends what they did in consulting. For example I was a pure strategy and markets guy that never even thought about revenue (all market and competitive analysis) so I got rocked my first year. Friends of mine who did consulting for CFO clients and/or more operationally focused work were better equipped to pick up modeling, accounting, valuation, etc. The deal cadence is quickly absorbed so that is not the issue. Consultants are generally better able to work independently and drive forward processes themselves since they typically work three years before PE and have some management experience; that is one of the tradeoffs in favor of hiring a banker. Can elaborate on anything if helpful.
