Do folks that model frequently (IB, PE, PC, etc.) use different excel shortcuts than the default?

I recall close to the end of my summer internship last year, one of the FT folks told me I was modeling all wrong because I was using the built-in Excel shortcuts. I believe he mentioned that everyone else installs the CapIQ Plugin which provides simpler shortcuts that are tailored to what we frequently do in the aforementioned finance fields.

However, I don't see anyone talking about it online so I'm not sure if I'm misremembering or what. Would appreciate some insight on this from experienced folks in IB/PE/PC. I'm beginning a new FT role soon so just want to ensure I come into work being able to model as efficiently as possible. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's common for professionals in IB, PE, and other finance-heavy roles to use a mix of built-in Excel shortcuts and custom tools or plugins like the CapIQ Plugin. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Default Excel Shortcuts: Many professionals still rely on built-in Excel shortcuts for speed and efficiency. These include navigation shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl + Arrow Keys), formatting shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl + 1 for formatting cells), and formula shortcuts (e.g., Alt + = for AutoSum).

  2. CapIQ Plugin: The CapIQ Plugin is widely used in finance roles because it provides tailored shortcuts and tools for tasks like pulling financial data, creating comps, and running analyses. These shortcuts are designed to streamline repetitive tasks specific to financial modeling and analysis.

  3. Custom Macros and Add-Ins: Beyond CapIQ, some teams or individuals create custom macros or use other add-ins to further optimize their workflow. These tools can automate tasks like formatting, data cleaning, or running specific calculations.

  4. Training and Bootcamps: If you're looking to sharpen your Excel modeling skills and learn the most efficient shortcuts, consider training programs like the WSO Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp. These programs often cover both default shortcuts and advanced tools/plugins used in the industry.

To hit the ground running in your new role, familiarize yourself with both the default Excel shortcuts and any plugins or tools your team uses, like CapIQ. If you're unsure, ask your colleagues during onboarding—they'll appreciate your proactive approach to efficiency!
