Does your analyst rank affect private equity recruiting?
Hey everyone,
I’ve had a great first year where I’ve learned a ton and gotten very close to a lot of senior bankers, but my goal from the beginning of my investment banking stint has been to recruit for a PE job. Rankings are coming out soon, and I’m excited to get feedback and learn how I can improve.
I am curious how my ranking will determine my PE recruiting success. Old threads say that rankings don’t matter because PE recruiting begins so early, but with the apparent delay from COVID, it’s looking like PE recruiting will happen after everyone gets their first year ranking/bucket. Also, I come from what’s considered a top group (as far as PE placement is), so how does that affect anything? I’ve just heard several times that rankings and buckets are often political and it is more important to get really close with seniors who will vouch for you once recruiting hits. Thanks everyone!
Many of the headhunters I've met with over the years have asked for reviews / employer feedback / ranking within the class. I'm certain that no one is going to admit to being bottom ranked in this process, but it can be a nice bonus if you can (honestly) say you're at the top.
Congratulations! This has understandably been a tough year to ramp up as a new IB Analyst. Rankings definitely matter, and are yet another tool that the PE firms use to evaluate which candidates to interview. If you do receive top ranking, add a simple bullet to your resume reflecting "Top-ranked first year Analyst" and then be prepared to talk to recruiters (and eventually the PE firms) about exactly how you distinguished yourself from your peers to earn top performance.
What if u r middle / bottom? Any risk they find out if u lie?
Of course there's always a risk any lies on your resume will be uncovered. It's bad enough if they're uncovered during the interview process, but even worse if they find out later on, as it would be grounds for termination. If you're middle/bottom ranked, invest your time/energy into 1) identifying the areas where you do excel; and, 2) working on developing the skills needed to improve the feedback for your next review. You will be asked for references during the interview process, and you'll need to make sure the Associate/VP/MD references you provide can & will support the content of your resume.
Awesome, thank you. I think my firm never actually tells us our exact bucket, but my review went very positively and I was told I was ranked in the top x of our analyst class (pretty high, so I wonder if that means top bucket, but I cannot confirm for sure). Just wondering if anyone else has been from a group / firm that will never tell you your exact bucket; if so, how did you write about it on your resume / talk about it in interviews?
Great question! There are several banks that don't formally rank or bucket. Just be prepared to share details during your meetings with headhunters and throughout the interview process. "Our team/bank doesn't formally rank, but I was told I received one of the highest bonuses for my performance. I had a very strong review, and feedback from my staffer/senior bankers included....." and here's where you insert all of the positives and any areas where you've distinguished yourself through the past 6 months/year.
By the way, if your annual review didn't place you at or towards the top of your analyst class, it's better to prepare to address it "head on" with the headhunters/interviewers. Identify your strengths....then acknowledge an "area of opportunity", and talk about what you're doing to improve or develop it into a strength.
