Dreadful PE Processes in Europe ... how do you get through this?
I'm doing processes since ~ 1 Year. I get a lot of traction, interviews, etc., converted now some but there were some issues why I then did not take it (basically mainly location, where in the process said they would compromise and then said I need to permanently move to office XYZ).
I just find the experience interviewing with PE funds absoutely dreadful. From the start it always feels like the chances of converting are super tiny. They just load up on a bunch of candidates and then kick you after four rounds with the feedback "could have gone deeper on the commercial levers".
Additionally, a lot of the processes seem super messy. Had it several times now that they scheduled in-person interviews in my city (I then did not travel that day) just to get a cancellation 1.5h before the interview.
I had so many extremely unsymphatetic interviews of PE mid-levels joining the call 10mins late (in rush), not even introducing themselves and acting totally uninterested/annoyed that they need to interview now.
In general compared to recruiting in college for MBB/IB it feels so much more unstructured. Of course these firms are much smaller and don't have the same HR machinery, but it just gets on my nerve.
Doesn't just apply to me but to various of colleauges I have talked about this.
You get through it because there is no alternative. Focus on what you can control.
Happened to me as well
To me, all these things you mentioned (canceling shortly before, not introducing themselves etc.) always were warning signs which I think can be taken as a glimps into the working culture.
I don't want to work in an envrionment like that. You can bet that if they treat candidates like that, only imagine how they will treat their employees...
Fully agree. I had intervieaws where I was super excited & motivated going in. Aced the technicals but as soon as I went out, got a bad feel in my stomach and all the motivation was gone.
It really also seems to correlate with pedigree/type of role. I had a few less sexy non investment interviews (i.e., with operating partners) and those felt genuinely nice/caring/wanting to hear my story and present themselves as good and honest as possible.
