Equity Research vs. Private Equity: Roadmap and Job Search for a Fresher

Hi everyone,

I recently graduated with a BBA, and over the past few months, I’ve realized that finance is the field I want to pursue, specifically in Equity Research (ER) and Private Equity (PE). However, I am confused about which path to take and how to get started.

I have no practical knowledge or experience in finance, but I’ve begun learning financial modeling and studying derivatives. Since ER has a more structured roadmap than PE, I plan to try for an internship or job in Equity Research first. That being said, I would still like to understand how to position myself for PE in the long run.

I have a few key questions where I need guidance from experienced professionals and those who have been through this journey:

1. How can I land my first internship or job in Equity Research or Private Equity as a fresher?

  • What are the essential skills I need to master?
  • What certifications (like CFA, or FMVA) can add value to my resume?
  • How important is networking, and what are the best ways to approach professionals in this field?

2. MBA Right After Undergrad vs. Gaining Work Experience First

  • Many of my classmates took admission into low-tier MBA colleges right after undergrad. I was also planning to do the same and attempted the entrance exams but didn’t score well enough for a top B-school, so I decided not to pursue it this year.
  • However, after speaking to a few professionals, I was advised that an MBA is more valuable after gaining a few years of experience. What’s your take on this?

3. How to Transition from Equity Research to Private Equity?

  • If I start with ER, what should be my approach to eventually breaking into PE?
  • Are there specific skills or experiences that would make the transition easier?

I would love to hear insights from those who have been through this process or are currently working in ER/PE. What would you recommend for someone like me trying to break into the industry? Any advice or personal experiences would be highly appreciated!
