Ex-lawyers in distressed / SS

Which monkeys here are ex legal professionals who had private practice experience and now ended up in investment seats in SS / Distressed shops? If so, did you make a jump in IB first? Or first / currently work in a hybrid “restructuring” / “research” role at the fund you’re at?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from law to investment banking, particularly in specialized areas like distressed or special situations (SS), can follow different paths. Here are some insights:

  1. Jump to Investment Banking First:

    • Many ex-lawyers, especially those from corporate (M&A/Capital Markets) or bankruptcy law backgrounds, find it easier to transition into investment banking first. This is because they can leverage their experience on deals with bankers to make a compelling case for their move.
  2. Hybrid Roles:

    • Some ex-lawyers might start in hybrid roles such as restructuring or research positions at funds. These roles can utilize their legal expertise while allowing them to gain financial and investment experience.
  3. Targeting Specific Banks:

    • Lawyers with specialized expertise (e.g., patent litigators) might target banks or boutiques that can benefit from their specific skills, such as TMT boutiques.
  4. Networking:

    • Networking is crucial. The guide emphasizes reaching out to both Bulge Brackets and reputable boutique banks, as boutiques might have less rigid hiring criteria and be more willing to give a shot to candidates with non-traditional backgrounds.
  5. Convincing Story:

    • Crafting a convincing story about why you want to transition from law to banking is essential. This involves standing behind your previous choices and articulating how your legal experience adds value to the banking deal team.

Got there via IB. Know plenty of people who have done the research / workout path too. The distressed research role definitely pigeonholes you into distressed and it can be hard to get a core investing role even within distressed. It’s also hard to get into one of those roles unless your law job is in RX (mine was not). Banking was not necessarily fun but gave me the tools to have a broader option set.

Any chance i could PM you? No worries if not I just wanted to ask some qs
