exit opps for sourcing analyst at PE/GE firm?

if I were to accept a sourcing role at a PE/GE firm for SA and then potentially FT, what are exit opps or future career paths I can explore?

Heard sourcing isn't good in terms of closing deals + more of a sales roles and no financial modeling

Not impossible but if you have a good story of why you want to work in investment team and network well with whichever company you're interested in you can have a shot

You can do this but it’ll be much more difficult than those coming from banking. Old school shops view this as a typical sales person. Will have to invest your own time in working on your modeling skills

got you, do you think its impossible and I rather push back my grad cycle to go for IB SA instead? or should i take the SA at a firm like PSG Equity or Battery and move further to FT with it?

  1. No I don’t think it’s impossible. Depends what you want. Also not sure what firms you want to break into.
  2. Up to you if you want banking or sourcing experience. Banking more grueling obviously but easier to break into more high caliber firms later in career where sourcing is a different muscle and you have to work to break in. A MF fund is going to take ex IB much more seriously than sourcing. If they even look at sourcing at all. (Take this from a guy in BD).
  3. If you have offers at PSG and Battery you will have a great beginning to your career. Many cases of folks going there then lateraling into other firms. Dont listen to the noise on this site - those are two great entry level firms to start at. Others can add more color. Maybe some potential culture issues there / not sure on fund returns. But in terms of breaking in you’re in a good spot!

If you're going to a reputable shop like the ones you've mentioned in your comments, you can do whatever you want in venture and growth. If you put your hand up after 1-3 years and express an interest in execution (and have demonstrated you're smart / hard-working) you should get a shot at that shop or at another firm. Keep in mind this door will be most open to you earlier in your career, if you stay in a pure BD role for 5+ years, you're probably pigeonholed there for a while.

It's definitely a narrower set of exit ops than e.g. IB or consulting. Going to buyout PE, corp dev, FP&A, etc. will not be an option without something else in the interim
