Family Offices : The Hidden Final Boss of Finance? How Do You Get In & What's It Really Like?

Hi apes,

I’m looking to better understand the Family Office landscape and would appreciate insights from those working in this space across different regions, US, UK, Middle East, Singapore, India, etc. I have done a lot of work for family offices in my current tax advisory role and I have been intrigued to learn how these offices work globally, more so in the more mature economies.

From what I gather, FOs can be quite diverse, right from institutional-style setups to lean, entrepreneurial teams with significant exposure. I’d love to hear first-hand (or heard/second-hand) experiences on:

1. How did you break into your FO role? Was it through headhunters, prior IB/PE experience, networking, or a more unconventional route? What were the qualifications sought after for your role?

2. What is the nature of the work? More PE-style investing, portfolio management, strategic wealth structuring, or operating company oversight?

3. Exit options? Do professionals tend to stay long-term, transition back to funds, or move between FOs?

4. Team size and culture? Are these typically lean setups where you wear multiple hats, or do they resemble more structured, multi-team environments?

5. Compensation benchmarks? For example, in India, FO Principals can earn ~$1.2M USD annually and Analysts ~$50k USD, but I’m curious how that compares globally.

Would appreciate hearing your experience, both the rewarding aspects and the challenges. Feel free to DM if you prefer to share details privately.

Thanks in advance for your time and insights!
