FDD --> MM IB --> MM PE?

I spent about 1.5 years in FDD at a B4 and then have spent another 1.5 years in a top coverage group within a MM bank. I have 2 deals closed, about to wrap up my 3rd (all start to finish).

I am looking to make an exit to PE but have not had a lot of recruiters bite / reach out. Any tips on just getting my foot into the door? I have no interest in LMM or MF, and would like to continue working on similar size deals to the ones I am working on right now (nice mix of transaction complexity with semi-competent management teams).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips to help you transition from MM IB to MM PE:

  1. Leverage Your Network:

    • Utilize your existing network from both your FDD and MM IB experiences. Reach out to colleagues, mentors, and alumni who might have connections in the PE space.
    • Attend industry events and webinars to meet professionals in the PE industry.
  2. Engage with Headhunters:

    • Proactively reach out to headhunters who specialize in PE placements. Make sure your resume highlights your deal experience and the skills relevant to PE.
    • Focus on headhunters known for placing candidates in MM PE firms.
  3. Highlight Relevant Experience:

    • Emphasize your deal experience, particularly the complexity and size of the transactions you’ve worked on. This will resonate with MM PE firms looking for candidates with hands-on deal experience.
    • Showcase your ability to work with semi-competent management teams, as this is a valuable skill in PE.
  4. Tailor Your Applications:

    • Customize your resume and cover letter for each PE firm you apply to, highlighting how your experience aligns with their investment strategy and deal size.
    • Be specific about your interest in MM PE and why you prefer it over LMM or MF.
  5. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Brush up on your technical skills and be ready to discuss your deal experience in detail. Be prepared to walk through your closed deals and explain your role in each.
    • Practice common PE interview questions, including those related to financial modeling, valuation, and investment thesis.
  6. Utilize Online Resources:

    • Make use of WSO’s resources, such as the Private Equity Interview Prep and Financial Modeling Resources, to strengthen your technical skills and interview readiness.
    • Participate in WSO forums and discussions to gain insights and advice from others who have successfully made the transition.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of getting your foot in the door at a MM PE firm. Good luck!

You and everyone else my friend. It’s a very difficult recruiting environment right now and I know it’s not your preference but LMM is likely your best choice. With such a large pool of people looking, the firms that are hiring at all can be even more selective in finding the right person. Your profile would likely be a stretch for top MM and UMM firms as is (not saying impossible). Did you go to a target school? Just trying to get a better sense of your difficulty getting traction so far
