Follow up with 1st round interviewer or 2nd round interviewer?

Hey guys,

So little issue here. I had 2 interviews for a boutique PE firm (2nd one was final round) and I'm not sure who to follow up with. I got plugged with the VP who was my first interviewer and they asked me to come again for a second round with a principal... Pretty sure the VP is higher up... My first interview was definitely better than my second one so not sure who to follow up with... Am I going behind the principal's back if I follow up with the VP? Am I shooting myself in the foot if I follow up with the principal?

Thank you all for the help

Rule of thumb is to always follow up with the more senior IP - your followup will most likely never move the needle as for the actual decision and the more senior IP is always going to have more say, but this is the best convention.
