Doing well but feel like I am a Fraud Personality Hire, Leave Industry Completely?

Hi all I am at a UMM firm where only 2 out of 8 associates got the SR associate promote, and I was one of them, but most likely will be leaving and not accepting.

I have had very strong reviews, but feel like I am more of a personality hire, and eventually this will catch up to me and get me "exposed".

Every senior raved how great I am and how much of a pleasure I am to work with, but they are not in the weeds. They do not realize I have to lean on my VP and have him baby hand hold me through 8/10 analysis we do. The stress and anxiety of just always having to be 100% correct and always having to have an answer and support and backup is just killing me, I am uneasy and nauseous 24/7. I am literally miserable because of this job, even though I am compensated well and have been doing well according to my seniors.

I am thinking of leaving completely and going into strategic finance. Anyone in a similar boat or had similar thoughts?

This sounds more like you should seek therapy or a life coach for your anxiety first.  This will always be a stressful industry, but changing jobs may not solve your problem.

You are getting good feedback, from my perspective as an outsider knowing nothing else, I would take that at face value and work on your areas for growth where you are.  You may ultimately decide to leave, but doing so is likely a "one-way door" and there are also several anecdotes on this website of people who left a role and then later regret it.

I don't know what kind of relationships you have outside the office, but if I were you this is something I would talk to my dad about, at least weekly, in order to get some moral support and stay grounded.

I mean this in a loving way but get a grip my friend because you thankfully have learned a most valuable lesson that 99% of hardos NEVER learn and thus get laid off - you have learned that in reality its all politics and likeability and that nobody gives a shit about everything else! the "people finding out" shit is textbook imposter syndrome. Be thankful youve got a job where even if you fuck up you get paid and praised!!! who cares if somebody "finds out" they would likely all still have rave reviews for you if you needed a new job which wouldnt happen anyway

They liked me so much they said "We think the you will be able to pick up the technicals on the desk".

The person responding is not the OP, I am lol that is so weird he is like roleplaying me...

So I was in around 14 PE processes and I only converted 2 into offers. I struck out on 12/14 model tests (which maybe should have told me this career was not for me lol) I just guess my firm had more of a "leniency" on mistakes I made, and I was able to shine pretty hard on behavioral and fit, which they actually mentioned when I got my offer.

Sounds rough. If the stress is constant and making you miserable, leaving for something that fits better mentally makes sense. Money isn’t worth being sick all the time.

You'll regret it if you leave, seriously. You are likely getting in your own way and are more competent than you think. Preemptively wanting to quit is a stress response and a symptom of not managing your imposter syndrome well. The work you need to do is on your own confidence and managing your anxiety even moreso than your technical skills.

Your seniors aren't stupid and it's not easy to get promoted. Give them and yourself more credit. Soft skills are incredibly valuable especially when you get more senior. People like doing business with personable individuals. We view our highest potential juniors based on their soft skills and work ethic - anyone can learn how to build a model or write an investment memo - it's not rocket science.

If your managers like having you around, you likely have flexibility to go to someone higher up and talk about some of these challenges. Having a great personality can go a long way in opening people up to help you. You see 'personality' as a disadvantage; you're looking at it the wrong way. You have an advantage over a lot of people out there who can't seem to figure out how to build relationships or even have a simple conversation.
