Funds with Similar Strategy to TCI / PE-like

Hi Everyone,

I created a new account just for this post.

I'm currently a 3rd Yr Associate at big name MFPE, and I'm considering switching to the HF world for my next stint. I'm happy to elaborate as to why and talk about my experience in MFPE, but don't want to shift the topic of the thread by starting with that in my first post.

When I think about moving to a Hedge Fund, ideally I would like something that is relatively similar to (the good bits of) Private Equity :

  • Big, concentrated bets
  • Long(er) time horizon (e.g. not quarterly earnings)
  • Relatively limited shorting
  • "PE-style" due diligence

Ideally places with a good track record and good unit economics. As I'm London based, TCI obivously comes to mind. What other funds have similar strategies (in Europe or US, I can move)?

Thank you!

You’re literally describing the job most PE people want as a next step: no process, concentrated long term bets, deep business diligence, limited shorting, good unit economics, strong track record. Not sure there are many of these left in the world outside of TCI, Pershing Square, WindAcre, Soroban, Stockbridge, AltaRock, HMI. I think that’s literally the list beyond the activists like ValueAct, Trian, Sachem Head, etc. and tiger cubs. Collectively, there are like 2-3 seats a year for these places so good luck finding one as everyone else has the exact same criteria.

TCI is a unicorn in terms of scale and style. Pershing is the next closest comp as previous commenter noted. Altarock and Valley forge are smaller but seemingly similar in style. The obvious challenge (and economic advantage) of the concentrated, LT holding period style is research teams don't need to be scaled relative to trad L/S and turnover is low, so obviously fewer seats are available.
