GMAT or GRE to mitigate GPA for MF interviews?
Me: Incoming analyst at a mid BB in a top group, target school (not HYPSM but one of the top public’s), 3.60-3.69 GPA by the time I graduate, 34 ACT score from high school. I’m intending to either participate in on cycle or off cycle with hopes of going to a MF
Although my banking group typically places in MF PE, my GPA is on the lower end. I'm not sure how good my ACT is for PE recruiting. Some have mentioned with a really solid GMAT/GRE score, how much my GPA will hurt me can be limited. I’m a good test taker and am not super concerned about scoring very well, my question is just should I take the GMAT or GRE for my intended purpose? Which score will carry more weight? Thank you
Just round up to 3.7. Nobody will check. You've made it to a top banking group.
I’ve heard funds checking transcripts and even SAT scores. How true is this
Based on the most helpful WSO content, taking the GMAT would likely be the better choice for your situation. Here's why:
Relevance to Private Equity and MBA Applications: The GMAT is more commonly associated with finance roles and MBA admissions, which are often pathways to MF PE. A strong GMAT score (ideally 740+) can serve as a "stamp" of intellectual horsepower and help mitigate a slightly lower GPA, as highlighted in multiple WSO threads.
Perception in the Industry: While the GRE is gaining traction, the GMAT is still the gold standard in the finance and private equity world. It aligns more closely with the expectations of headhunters and PE firms, especially for candidates targeting MFs.
Your Background: With a solid ACT score (34) and confidence in your test-taking abilities, you have a strong chance of excelling on the GMAT. A high score will not only strengthen your PE candidacy but also keep MBA options open down the line.
Advice from WSO Threads: Many users emphasize the importance of playing to your strengths. If you're confident in your quantitative and verbal skills, the GMAT is a more direct way to demonstrate your capabilities to PE recruiters and MBA programs.
In summary, prioritize the GMAT for its industry relevance and impact on both PE recruiting and future MBA applications. If you find the GMAT particularly challenging, you could consider the GRE as a backup, but the GMAT should be your first choice.
