GSAM Private Equity Thoughts + Exits?

Have read a bunch of discussions about GS PE, AIMS (not interested in that), and alternative investments at Goldman. I understand that it is a balance sheet bank, so no carry + comp is not equivalent to actual PE but comparable to IBD. With IBD, you do learn things but it is a lot of grunt and not that intellectually stimulating work that you do. That is why, was wondering about GS PE - was thinking it would be a solid opportunity to get the fundamentals & business intuition solid working there. One question that I had is - with such a solid intuition building right before these bankers recruit for PE, why won't solid PE players like BX / KKR etc of similar scale be interested in hiring after I work there for 2-3 years? Looking for thoughts on this by people who have actually worked in there / considered this.
