Historical Private Equity Cashflows

Hi everyone,

I work for a family office looking to allocate a significant part of its overall assets into private assets (PE, VC, Real Estate, etc.) over the upcoming years. While some of this we will likely do ourselves, in some areas (i.e. PE) we intend to allocate mostly to funds. I talked to a few banks that gave me a good idea of how I can model a PE portfolio, but realized that to properly do that, I need historical data on the average fund by "PE asset class" (i.e. VC, PE) - to be precise, how much capital do they call over their fund lifetime, how much do they distribute, what's the IRR/MOIC,...

Of course most funds are very secretive with their returns but I was hoping to find maybe somewhere on the internet some reliable data I can use as a first shot to build such a model. So far I've not considered any expensive subscriptions (Prequin etc.) in hope of maybe finding some data for free - i.e. through academic research or similar.

Would appreciate any input on the matter - either some concrete data or good advice on which tools/subscriptions may offer a good ratio of cost to quality.
