How Difficult Is It to Transition from Strategy Consulting to Private Equity? (Post-MBA)
Hey everyone,
I’d love to hear insights and experiences about transitioning from strategy consulting (e.g., MBB, Monitor, etc.) to Private Equity. I know that Investment Banking is the more traditional route, but how feasible is this move for consultants?
Some specific questions:
- How common is it for someone with a pure consulting background to break into PE without prior IB experience?
- Is it actually easier to transition pre-MBA rather than post-MBA? If so, at what level and in what types of firms?
- After an MBA from a top business school (e.g., HBS, Wharton, INSEAD), what level could a former consultant realistically enter PE at? Associate, or lower?
- Are there certain types of consultants (industries, skill sets, etc.) that have better chances?
- What would you recommend to someone looking to make this transition?
Would really appreciate any insights or personal experiences. Thanks!
