How do I know if PE is for me?

Just joined MBB and am planning to recruit for PE, but I don't know if I'm doing it because I want to or because I feel like it's the next prestige step to take. Longer-term, I am interested in working in a big tech role, startup, or growth equity. Friends are telling me that PE is a great way to turn myself into a "machine" and to learn finance and accounting, all of which sounds like it'd be valuable for my career in the long term. I'm a bit nervous about the WLB though.

I'm conflicted and would be grateful for any advice. How should I decide if it makes sense to jump to PE?

If you want to do tech / startup, just go there from MBB. Plenty of ex-consultants there and unless you’re at a great tech PE firm, I don’t really think being in PE helps you a ton. Maybe if you want to be on finance (CFO track) side of things or corp dev, but if you want more of a business-side role the consulting is way more relevant.

If you want to do growth equity, just go straight to growth equity. No point taking an intermediate step to PE if you aren’t interested and the WLB will probably suck. Growth investing is much more about sourcing / softer skills than buyout, and if you end up at some UMM/MF you’ll just be in the weeds on models all the time. Almost all top growth shops hire consultants so just go straight there if that’s what you want
