How do you get approached for Operating Exec roles?

My dad is a long term public company operations executive in a industry that PE likes quite a bit, with public company C suite experience. Thinking in the next few years as he heads towards retirement getting involved in some operating exec / board level work in the PE space could potentially be interesting.
