How long did it take for things to click?
Come from a mid-BB M&A group and currently a 1st year associate at an UMM ($8bn+) and having major imposter syndrome / dreading work.
Felt that at my bank I had good rapport and found the work to be relatively easy (aside from the long hours) and was rated top bucket. But the past ~3 months since I've been at my new firm I find myself struggling and confidence dropping (i.e., simple mistakes, drowning on the various DD workstreams, thinking like an associate vs analyst) and WFH surely hasn't helped either with building rapport with my team.
So those who have felt the above, does it get better? Maybe I'm just overthinking this but just wanted to put it out there.
Yes, it does took me about 3-5 deals. Ideally you’ll get a blend of new investments, add ons and exit.
I'm only a prospect but I've been told that PE associates take anywhere from 6-9 months to consistently be a net positive to their teams. Given that you started online as well, I'm sure ramping up will take even longer. Cut yourself some slack, I'm sure your perception of the situation is wayyyyyy worse than it really is.
Keep your head down, focus on learning from your mistakes and keep a positive attitude. You'll be fine.
This was in IB, but I had a Director tell me that The first year was for you (training, learning, networking, etc.). The second year was for the firm, meaning that they didn't expect you to be as productive till the second year. -> in reference to a two year up and out.
Took me about 4 months or so to feel like I was adding value and another 6-7 months after that to feel comfortable autonomously… then I lateraled and while I felt like I added value quickly at the new shop, I didn’t feel comfortable working autonomously again for 5-6 months as I adjusted to new workstyles and team dynamics
Practice non-action.
Work without doing.
Magnify the small;
increase the few.
Reward bitterness with care.

For my HF group, I generally say 6-9 months.
It took me at least 1 year, you should try to relax as things will get easier as time goes by.
