How to keep in touch with people from your previous job

I need to keep in touch with people from my previous two jobs because they are both potentially gatekeepers to future jobs (I am fully open to staying at the firm I am about to start at but as I have seen here, the VP promote is difficult).

One of them does work for PE firms - I worked with them for three years so I am assuming I can call them up from time to time to talk shop.

One of them is another investor and while our mandates do not overlap, they invited me into their personal hobby social spheres (e.g., tennis, art, wine, etc.).

Do I go about this by a catch-up Zoom every X months? Email? How does this work?

Thanks

I’ve seen all of the following:

1) Stop by the office once a year and say hi (this is common when someone moved out of state but still returns every now and then for business / pleasure). 2) Drop an email once every six months or so and ask how things are going. 3) Call a few times a year and just chat about the market in general, maybe make up a reason to ask a specific question or two. Substitute Zoom for call now that video chats are much more socially acceptable.

If you have a good rapport with someone, they should enjoy spending 30 minutes on the phone with you. Find a rhythm that works for you and go with it. There are no set rules.
