How to move up the profitablity ladder

Hi everyone:

I'm a pre-MBA analyst at a venture capital platform that has a social impact angle. I enjoy what I do with respect to looking at companies and thinking about investments, but I'm also hoping to transition to a private sector VC/PE platform after MBA. Due to our social impact angle, our returns are not that high, though we do only invest in businesses that are private sector/able to stand on its own. We do sacrifice the level of profitablity for businesses that have a social angle though.

I understand that my background would not be the most competitive for a purely profit-driven VC/PE fund, as our returns are merely decent. I will be applying to MBA next year. If I land at a top -5 school, what are some things I can do both now at my job, and before/during MBA, that can make myself a more competitive candidate for purely profit-driven VC/PE funds? I will be networking for sure, but I also want to improve my "hardware" (knowledge, experience, etc) to maximize my chance.

Thank you!
