Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're in a bit of a pickle. It's understandable that you're concerned about your career progression and the potential of being pigeonholed.

Firstly, don't discount your experience at the multi-family office. It's unique and could potentially set you apart from other candidates. You've gained exposure to a niche industry and have had the opportunity to work across the capital structure, which is valuable experience.

As for your concerns about moving into MM PE, it's not impossible. It might be more challenging given your non-traditional background, but it's not out of reach. You've already started speaking with headhunters, which is a good step.

In terms of networking, cold emailing could be a good strategy. Reach out to people in the industry, explain your situation and express your interest in MM PE. You never know who might be willing to give you a chance or who could provide valuable advice.

Lastly, don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone's career path is different and it's not a race. It's about finding what works for you and where you can add the most value. Keep pushing and don't lose hope. Remember, even a monkey can reach the top of the tree with enough determination!

Have you considered getting an MBA? Depending on how long you’ve spent at this family office, it may be difficult to recruit out of this situation. Also, depending on how senior you are, it may be more difficult to move. However, I have seen transitions from family offices to MM PE. The way you’d have to go about it is most likely by appealing to the industry niche you discussed. Does your family office have a reputation in said industry that PE firms would be familiar with?

I saw your response, so let me help some more. I honestly think if you’d like to make the move, going back to banking as an analyst may also make sense. Since you’re early in your career, burning a year here or there is fine and should not harm you in the long run if you do not want to go to b-school. I will say though that business school will be much easier although more expensive. Please feel free to also PM me if that makes sense.
