IB Exits

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming IB analyst at a top BB (at an Ivy currently). I’m looking to put in my two years and jump to the buyside/AM, but looking for something with a strong WLB and decent comp. Which PE firms are known for less hours, and what other investing/AM strategies would you recommend looking into?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding PE firms and other investment strategies with a strong work-life balance (WLB):

Private Equity Firms with Better Work-Life Balance:

  1. Family Offices:

    • Generally known for better work-life balance compared to traditional PE firms.
  2. Smaller, Local PE Shops:

    • Firms with around $500M AUM or less tend to have a better work-life balance.
    • Work can still be tough during deals, but overall, the balance is better than larger firms.
  3. Firms with Operational Backgrounds:

    • PE firms where senior management has an operational rather than a banking background may offer a better work-life balance.

Factors Influencing Work-Life Balance in PE:

  • Senior Team Background:

    • Ex-bankers may have more demanding expectations.
    • Operationally focused leaders may prioritize execution and thought process over long hours.
  • Fund Size and Niche:

    • Smaller funds and those with specific niches tend to have less competitive pressure, leading to better work-life balance.

Other Investment/Asset Management Strategies:

  1. Venture Capital (VC):

    • Some VC funds, especially those founded by ex-founders looking for a "cool retirement job," can offer a great work-life balance.
  2. Hedge Funds (HF):

    • Middle Market (MM) Hedge Funds might offer a better balance compared to larger funds.

Key Takeaways:

  • Work-life balance in PE is heavily influenced by the firm's size, niche, and the background of its senior team.
  • Family offices and smaller, local PE shops are generally better for work-life balance.
  • Exploring VC and MM HF roles can also be beneficial for achieving a good work-life balance.

If you need more detailed advice or specific firm recommendations, networking through an MBA program known for placing people into PE can be a strategic move.
