IB Internship -> PE Internship -> MBB FT?

Sup everyone, here's the situation nice and short.

I did an IB internship last summer at an MM, this year I have a PE internship at a UMM, and I graduate May 2024 from a non target. Here's the kicker, I want to go into consulting (better WLB supposedly) for FT.

1. Am I crazy for doing this, will I regret this down the line?
2. How can I most successfully achieve this?

Hi there, as someone who kind of has the same profile (LMM HF -> IB -> MBB full-time (?)), I have a few food for thought for you:

  • Yes, MBB may give you better WLB thanks to protected weekends, but you’ll be exhausted for other reasons, such as traveling. Also, for the weekdays, you might work up to 70-80 hours and also have to travel. Think about that a little more.
  • The skillset you learn in MBB consulting is much less technical than banking/PE. You’ll not have the ability to model if you do consulting (of course, you can also model on the side). That will alter your exit opps, from traditional buy-side to strategy and operations.
  • Consulting, at the end of the day, earn a bit less than IB/PE at the junior level and earn much less than IB/PE at the senior level. If pay is really important to you, then you may also factor in the smaller pay scale.
