If you skip On-cycle 1st year, will the quality of opportunities be the same in On-cycle next year?

Currently an An1 who just hit the desk. If I do on-cycle for 2025, will the quality and amount of opportunities be the same as they are now? In other words, do certain firms only interview first-year analysts for on-cycle, even if they are willing to do 3 years in IB?

Sitting out for 1 year & getting 1-year of experience before recruiting can actually help you prepare for interviews, as you will get some real deal experience to talk about/more experienced with modeling etc. It could potentially lead to a better placement, and you’re also more likely to know what do you want specifically, i.e. which industry vertical, strategy, culture/group etc.

If you're willing to stay a third analyst year and start with 2025 class, you will have the same opportunities - don't know of any firms that eliminate people going through oncycle after a year, unless you flunked oncycle the first year.

You may very well do better as you'll be able to talk in detail about deals, goals etc while your competition will just be hitting the desk
