Is This Private Equity?
I've come across a position at a pension plan, working in their private equity group but I'm not sure if it would be considered "private equity" per se. The job description says that the candidate will be working in a team that's a distinct functional area from the team that actually negotiates and closes transactions. Instead, the candidate will be working more in terms of managing the portfolio companies that the pension has already acquired.
Would this be considered a private equity job and what kind of opportunities can it lead to in the future?
portfolio management
I don't have a good sense of the job from your description. Typically working at a pension fund is not like working at a private equity firm, even if they do make direct investments... which is rare.
No its not.
So what could this job lead to in the future? (I can say that this is the private equity arm of the pension plan).
The job description includes maintaining financial models that value the portfolio companies, preparing variance analysis in terms of the portfolio company's performance, do some research to develop action plans on matters affecting the portfolio companies (i.e. taxes, law, regulation, etc).
Well, its portfolio management which is very much a part of the job profile of a number of people in PE (this is what consultants are hired for, but they are more hands on in the day to day business). However, not sure you will get the same credit as being in a private equity firm
The role will involve working closely with the CFO (both of the pension fund and of the portfolio companies) to cut costs, grow EBIT and potentially (depending on the strategy) to look for add-on accretive acquisitions.
Good job, closer to consulting / stragtegy than the number crunching and modelling of a 'private equity' job.
Thank you for the insights. Any more would still be appreciated (i.e. comp, lifestyle, etc).
