Jan/Sep 2026 IB/PE Off-Cycle London

Hi monkeys,

Saw an old similar thread and thought it would be useful to get an updated view for 2026.I’m an incoming 2026 IB SA at a BB in London (not GS/MS/JP), converted via spring week. I’ll be graduating in 2027 from MSc and would ideally like to complete one (or two) off-cycle internships in IB/PE before hopefully returning for the following summer. I already have 6+ months of IB experience at smaller boutiques.

I’d like to put together a solid list of funds and banks that typically offer off-cycle openings in Jan/Sept, along with application timelines. Also, if anyone knows which headhunters are best to contact in this scenario, that would be super helpful too

Any insights would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about off-cycle IB/PE opportunities in London for 2026:

1. Banks and Funds Offering Off-Cycle Internships

  • Bulge Bracket Banks (BBs):

    • Goldman Sachs: Historically, off-cycle roles are limited and often filled through networking events (e.g., August events for summer interns).
    • JPMorgan: Opens applications around November, but spots are very limited.
    • Morgan Stanley: Typically fills off-cycle roles early, with applications opening as early as July.
    • Other BBs: Many operate on a rolling basis, so applying early is key.
  • Elite Boutiques (EBs):

    • Evercore: Sends networking invites to shortlisted candidates early in the process.
    • PJT Partners: Often fills roles through intern conversions and poaching, with limited external opportunities.
    • Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP): Primarily recruits from their intern class.
  • Private Equity (PE) Firms:

    • Many PE firms recruit for off-cycle roles on an ad-hoc basis. Networking is critical here, as headhunters may not always be reliable for off-cycle placements.

2. Application Timelines

  • January Off-Cycle Roles:

    • Applications typically open in the preceding fall (September-November).
    • Some firms may already have filled spots by December, so early networking and applications are crucial.
  • September Off-Cycle Roles:

    • Applications often open in the spring (March-May).
    • Rolling processes mean that applying as soon as roles are posted increases your chances.

3. Headhunters to Contact

  • Headhunters play a significant role in PE recruiting but are less effective for IB off-cycle roles. For PE, you’ll need to manage them carefully:
    • Key Headhunters: CPI, Dartmouth Partners, KEA Consultants, and Blackwood.
    • Be proactive in reaching out to them and ensure you’re clear about your preferences (e.g., late-stage buyout roles).

4. Additional Tips

  • Networking:

    • Start reaching out to alumni and professionals at target firms now. Coffee chats and informational interviews can help you get on their radar.
    • For PE, networking directly with firms is often more effective than relying solely on headhunters.
  • Preparation:

    • Begin practicing LBO modeling and technical skills now. Many PE firms expect candidates to be proficient in these areas.
    • Tailor your CV to highlight your IB experience and any relevant deal exposure.
  • Timing:

    • The process moves quickly, especially for competitive roles. Be prepared to respond to headhunter outreach and interview requests within hours.
