Large Cap PE Internal Transfer - London to New York?

I work at an American PE firm's London office. I don't have US green card / citizenship, but would like to relocate to New York.

How difficult is internal transfer from London office to New York office in Large Cap PE? Does anyone know people who did this without US green card / citizenship? Would really appreciate any advice on London - New York relocation tips.

Ah, the old London to New York hop – classic move! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  • Visa and Work Authorization: Without a US green card or citizenship, you'll need your firm to sponsor a work visa. This can be a complex process, but large-cap PE firms often have the resources and experience to handle such matters. The type of visa would typically be an L-1 (for intra-company transfers) or an H-1B (for specialty occupations).

  • Internal Transfer Policies: Each firm has its own policy for internal transfers. Generally, they'll consider your performance, the needs of the New York office, and how your skills fit into their operations stateside.

  • Networking: Start conversations with your HR department and any New York-based colleagues. Express your interest and find out what opportunities might exist.

  • Timing: Transfers can take time, especially when visas are involved. Start planning well in advance of when you'd like to move.

  • Precedents: It's not uncommon for professionals to transfer from London to New York. While I don't have specific examples from the WSO threads, it's a well-trodden path, especially within large, global firms.

  • Preparation: Be ready to explain why you want to move and how it will benefit both you and the firm. Also, consider the cost of living difference and how it will affect your lifestyle.

Remember, showing initiative and being proactive is key. Good luck with your potential transatlantic shuffle!
