Learning resources ahead of joining a PE tech group

Hello gang,

I will be joining the tech/software group of a large cap PE fund coming from a generalist M&A background. Any ideas of how to best get up to speed on the industry, trends, etc? The actual financial modeling aspect I am less worried about.

Anything would be much appreciated!

To get up to speed on the tech/software industry ahead of joining a PE tech group, here are some actionable steps based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Resources for Industry Knowledge:

    • Explore articles, books, and websites that focus on software trends, product offerings, and use cases. These resources will help you understand the industry from both an investor and operator perspective.
    • Follow relevant Twitter feeds and blogs that discuss tech/software developments and investment trends.
  2. Focus on Tech-Specific PE Insights:

    • Look into discussions about distressed tech PE and tech-focused PE funds. These threads often highlight challenges and opportunities in the tech space, such as product issues or competitive dynamics.
    • Study how big PE tech players approach light turnarounds and distressed situations, as these are common scenarios in the tech/software sector.
  3. Stay Updated on Trends:

    • Read reports and discussions on tech earnings and industry outlooks. For example, "Tech Leads the Turnaround" and "Return of Tech Earnings" provide insights into market dynamics and recovery trends.
    • Keep an eye on macro trends in private equity, especially those related to secondary PE and automation in tech.
  4. Broaden Your Perspective:

    • Dive into growth equity investing resources, as they often overlap with tech/software investments.
    • Learn from operator-focused content to understand the practical challenges and strategies within tech companies.

By combining these resources and insights, you'll build a strong foundation to excel in your new role. Good luck!
