Looking beyond PE (public service or coding/tech or both?)

Am fortunate enough to have an offer to join a PE firm in summer 2019 as an associate. It would be a 2 year program with potential to stay on as a third year senior associate. (currently 8/9 months into a FT IB analyst stint)

I know I will love the diligence/analytical/investing aspect of the new position. Very much look forward to modeling/managing accountants, lawyers, consultants/portco exposure. However, I also understand I will not want to stay in PE beyond a VP level - when execution of deals gives away to LP relations/deal sourcing as the primary responsibilities.

Idk what exactly I want to do post-PE, but I have two ideas for next paths:

1) Law school (if I can get into a Harvard/Yale/Stanford/Columbia/Uchicago). Absolutely ZERO desire to practice corporate law. Am VERY interested in civil service - potentially working in a Robert Mueller/Preet Bharara capacity. Obviously can’t count on rising to the level of chief special investigator or primary prosecutor - but I absolutely get off to the idea of taking down people who take advantage of our capitalist system and fuel populist/“occupy Wall Street” sentiments.

In my mind, this path could take multiple forms (SEC, FBI, NY district attorneys office, Frderal Reserve). The vagueness points to how uninformed I currently am of the options - hence the post.

2) am fascinated with programming. The way the world is headed, i would say ten years from now, not knowing basic code would be equivalent to not knowing how to use SUM() in Excel - let alone more advanced functions. AI/machine learning/blockchain/Internet of things. Who the fuck knows how these disciplines will actually materialize. But I have no doubt that those with a proficient grasp of computer science (combined with business acumen honed through an IB/PE background) will be best positioned to see and capitalize on future trends. Really wish I would’ve studied computer engineering (rather than finance) in college.

I dont really have a specific ask/question in mind here. Just wondering if anyone else in a similar position (or anyone who has already completed the 2+2 path) has contemplated these paths.

Would love to get a stream of consciousness thread going here.

FYI - no way I would pursue an MBA unless the bulk of it was paid for AND I got into HBS/Stanford/Columbia/booth/Wharton
