M&A Tax Advisory

Hi guys,

I have been offered an internship in Deloitte Tax Advisory M&A department, in the future ( now I am after my first year of master studies) i would like to work in PE, and my question is, will this internship in tax advisory department add value to my resume ?? or better option for me is to concentrate on CFA Level I exam in December ??

This is a good question, as Im kind of interested to know.

I worked at a big 4 with an M&A tax advisory practice, but not in this division (In the transfer pricing division). From what I could tell it was all very much tax law related work, so Im not sure what skills where actually transferable to IB/PE. Perhaps there are some, would be interesting to know....

Even if it isnt transferable or related skills, perhaps tehre are good contacts to be made, as a lot of work is probably done for PE and IBs. And Id say you are better off doing the internship than CFA if you have no other internships, as for me working experience will trump CFA level 1

Welcome to the site!

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to intern in a Big 4 M&A Tax roll this spring. So I both am interested in hearing others opinion on this thread and can hopefully provide some insight of my own.

So these groups are really cool, because they deal with structuring deals. This may not be a super relevant skill for an Analyst in IB, but for a VP in IB, Associate+ in PE, or Counsel on a deal anywhere, these skills can become very, very valuable.

My team is really cool because it is a mixture of JDs, CPAs, and now they are trying to round it out with a couple finance guy.

Also you can just call Transaction Advisory what it is: Valuations. Having spent the last year in Valuations I can tell you this is a step down, not a lateral or a step up. Also the specialized knowledge you would get in an M&A advisory group would not be very valuable, as most of Valuation is based on "Fair Market Value" and not actual value. Also most of the work is built around decreasing the value to avoid paying taxes, so having an understand of how to increase the value of the cash flow through tax implications is not a huge-value add.

All that said, if you are a CPA you should have no problem lateraling into IB.

Best, and lets touch base in a few months when I start there

but are the skills gained going to be an asset any field outside of this?

whatever takes us away, will be the same to drive us on remember to find a new way to way to carry on.
