Most Annoying Thing About PE / IB

What do people think is the single most annoying thing about PE / IB?

I’ll start: When a senior person in a meeting says a one off of thing that could be interesting to look at that and the mid level person is vigorously taking notes on what they are saying. Like relax pal, we don’t actually have to do this it was just a one off thought that doesn’t even make any sense in this context - thanks

Based on the most relatable WSO threads, here are some of the most annoying aspects of PE/IB that resonate with many professionals:

  1. Unnecessary Workload from Seniors: A recurring frustration is when seniors casually mention ideas or tasks that aren't well thought out, yet mid-levels or juniors feel compelled to act on them, leading to wasted time and effort. This aligns with your example of overzealous note-taking for irrelevant comments.

  2. Poor Management and Communication: Many threads highlight how seniors often fail to provide clear guidance, leaving juniors to figure things out on their own. This inefficiency wastes time and creates unnecessary stress.

  3. Fake Deadlines and Micromanagement: Seniors setting arbitrary deadlines just to ensure work is done early, only to pile on last-minute edits, is a common grievance. This creates a cycle of unnecessary revisions and stress.

  4. Toxic Culture and Lack of Respect for Juniors: From being excluded in meetings to being treated as invisible, juniors often feel undervalued. The lack of acknowledgment or constructive feedback can be demoralizing.

  5. Turning Comments: Endless rounds of edits on presentations or models, often for minor or inconsequential changes, are seen as one of the most inefficient and frustrating parts of the job.

  6. Unrealistic Expectations: The expectation for perfection, even on trivial details like footnote formatting, can be exhausting and demoralizing.

  7. Lack of Ownership and Creativity: Many juniors feel like they're just executing tasks without any real input or control, which stifles intellectual curiosity and engagement.

These issues highlight the broader challenges of inefficiency, poor management, and a lack of respect for time and effort in both PE and IB.
