Most Successful / Largest MF Spin-Outs?
What are the most successful / largest firms ($5bn+) that are relatively new and were started by MF partners / senior people in the past 10-15 years? Think the obvious ones beyond that comes to mind is Blue Owl, 26North, Hunter Point (not $5bn, but you know it will be one day lol), Searchlight, Altamont, Riverwood, what else?
And not just PE -- interested in a list of anything from private credit / DL to distressed to special sits to gp stakes to whatever.
Brighton Park is sick, started by one of the ex-heads of GA
Patient Square (KKR)
facts. the people who started this (momtazee) are top notch from what i understand
Envision notwithstanding
Level Equity (Insight)
Ardian was a MBO somewhere around 2010
It came out of AXA, a European insurance firm
Gamut (Apollo)
Why is Gamut ‘succussful’? From what I’ve seen it’s been a fairly pedestrian outcome. Have they even raised a second fund?
CC Capital (did some really good deals), Iron Park Capital (has something going GA it seems) both out of BX (in addition to the ones you listed).
Stonepeak (blackstone)
The best on here by far
Lol everyone's out here listing their own firm
Sixth Street, Cornell Capital out of GS.
Baypine, Arcline, and Recognize raised pretty large first time vehicles.
HPS is technically a spinout. Eldridge out of Guggenheim.
Kennedy Lewis. Josh Harris’s new vehicle sounds in that ballpark as well.
I would second BayPine - they’re probably going to do well
Cove Hill
Firm will tell candidates they want to be the next great PE firm but in the same breath says they want to hold bootstrapped vertical SaaS businesses for 10-15 years. Anyone interested in the firm should look at the junior employee attrition. Churn and burn culture. Look elsewhere.
Bump
What is Hunter Point? I've never heard of that. Sounds like you work there.
GSO Co-Founder Bennett Goodman. Not sure how big/successful they are
bump, any updates on Hunter Point?
bump
BayPine will be a big one in near term (BX / KKR partners + silver lake founder). ~$3bn inaugural fund in this fundraising environment tells a lot
Any chance you know who their HH is?
CPI
CPI for BayPine. Fundraise (most or all) took place before the shitty environment also
BlackRock (Blackstone)
+1. While we're at it:
Blackstone (Lehman Brothers)
KKR (Bear Stearns Merchant Banking)
Apollo (Drexel Burham)
Ares (Apollo) probably the biggest one
MBK Partners (South Korean), was founded by former Carlyle Asia president Michael Kim; their latest fund raised $6.5bn.
